Sub-feature ยท The Grading Pipeline

From a scanned paper to a graded report โ€” automatically.

Grading a whole class isn't one step, and Skora AI doesn't treat it like one. It reads your question paper, reads every student's handwriting, marks each answer, and turns the results into feedback and a study plan โ€” accurately, and fast enough to publish the same day.

The flow

Five steps from a scanned sheet to a published report.

Every paper moves through the same five stages โ€” confident grades flow straight through, anything uncertain pauses for a teacher.

01

Scan

Bring in answer sheets via scanner, copier, or phone camera โ€” one or several thousand at a time.

02

OCR

Handwriting, equations, diagrams and MCQ bubbles are extracted and lined up against the right question.

03

AI grade

Each answer is judged against the key with math equivalence, choice rules, and partial credit applied consistently.

04

Teacher review

Confident grades auto-approve; anomalies, low-confidence OCR, and outliers surface for one-tap teacher override.

05

Publish

Per-student reports go live in parent and student apps โ€” marks, weak areas, and recommended chapters in one place.

What it does

Everything between a scanned paper and a graded report.

01
Reads the question paper

Upload your question paper and Skora AI turns it into a structured set of questions, marks, and answer keys โ€” automatically.

02
Grades every answer sheet

Each student's answers are marked question by question against the paper, scored consistently across the whole class.

03
Reads handwriting at scale

Scanned answer sheets are read โ€” handwriting included โ€” and each one is matched to the right student.

04
Links to your syllabus

Feedback is tied back to your own textbooks, so every weak area points to the exact chapter to revise.

05
Connects teaching content

Graded results link to relevant lesson material, so follow-up teaching is one click away.

Step one ยท Reading your paper

Hand it your paper. It does the setup.

You upload the question paper โ€” and the answer key, if you have one. Skora AI reads the whole thing: every section, question, sub-question, marks split, and the correct answers. What used to be an hour of manual setup happens in under a minute.

  • Reads any layout โ€” sections, internal choices, sub-questions, and marks per question
  • Builds the answer key from your key sheet โ€” or works it out from your own textbooks when you don't have one
  • Marks where each answer came from, so teachers know what's worth a second look
  • Flags anything it's unsure about for a quick check before grading begins
  • Re-uploading the same paper is instant โ€” it's only ever set up once
Paper Setup โ€” a question paper parsed into sections, questions, sub-questions, marks split, and the extracted answer key
Step two ยท Grading the answers

Every answer marked, every mark explained.

Each student's sheet is read and graded question by question against the paper. Skora AI doesn't just hand back a number โ€” it shows which points the student earned, which they missed, and links straight to the answer in their original paper.

  • Fair and consistent โ€” every answer marked against the key, the same way across the whole class
  • Marks rounded to the nearest half and capped at each question's maximum
  • Choice rules applied automatically โ€” "attempt any 4 of 5", internal-OR, section choices
  • Teachers click a mark and jump straight to that answer in the original paper
  • Weak areas become specific revision suggestions tied to your syllabus
  • Clean papers auto-approve; anything unusual is flagged for teacher review
Per-question grading โ€” marks and feedback per question with jump-to-answer in the original paper
Frequently asked

Pipeline questions teachers ask first.

What actually happens between upload and a graded report?
The question paper is parsed by a document-layout model into sections, questions, sub-questions, and marks; a text-only LLM then extracts answer keys, pulling from your key sheet first and the indexed chapter content where the key is silent. Scanned answer sheets go through OCR, the student is identified from the header, every response is matched to a question, and marks are computed against the key. The full pipeline runs end-to-end without manual intervention for the auto-approved 80%.
Does setting up the same paper twice cost twice?
No. The paper-layout output is cached against a SHA-256 hash of the source PDF on trExamSchedulePaper, so re-uploading or re-running an unchanged paper incurs zero layout-model calls. Structure extraction has its own cache, and only changed pages re-extract on partial re-uploads. This matters during dry runs and dress rehearsals before a real exam cycle.
How is mathematical equivalence handled in grading?
A dedicated equivalence checker recognises algebraic identities (xยฒ + 2x + 1 = (x+1)ยฒ), numeric forms (0.5 = 1/2 = 50%), unit conversions (100 cm = 1 m), commutative arrangements, simplified vs unsimplified fractions, scientific notation, trig identities, balanced chemical equations, vector forms, log/exp, and set notation. The student is marked on the answer, not the form they wrote it in.
What is "mark precedence" and why does it matter?
Marks are driven by three inputs in strict precedence: the answer key (keyPoints, marking scheme, penalties) is authoritative; teacher grading instructions apply only where the key is silent; the strictness setting (Lenient / Standard / Strict) is a tie-breaker, never an override. This guarantees that the same student answer always gets the same marks, regardless of which teacher or AI model runs the grading โ€” which is what makes the system auditable.
How long does grading a class take end-to-end?
Paper setup is typically under a minute. Per-sheet OCR plus grading runs in parallel on the Grading Engine Windows service, so a class of 42 papers usually completes within 15โ€“25 minutes from scan upload to a teacher-review-ready queue. Same-day publishing of results to the parent app is the normal operating mode.
