On-screen marking vs AI answer sheet checking for schools

CBSE's move to on-screen marking has every principal asking about OSM. Here is how it differs from AI answer sheet checking, and which one fits your school's own exams.

On-screen marking or AI checking?

CBSE has announced on-screen marking for Class 12 board answer scripts, and "OSM" is now a word every principal hears. Many schools are asking the next question: should we use on-screen marking for our own exams too? Or is AI answer sheet checking the better step? They sound similar. They solve different problems.

What on-screen marking is

In on-screen marking, answer scripts are scanned and examiners mark them on a computer instead of on paper. The software shows one answer at a time, the examiner types the mark, and the totals are added up automatically. No question is missed, no total is added up wrongly, and scripts never travel in bundles.

What does not change: an examiner still reads and marks every single answer. On-screen marking makes marking tidier and safer. It does not make it much faster, because the slowest part, reading each answer and deciding the mark, is still done by a person.

What AI answer sheet checking is

AI answer sheet checking, sometimes called AI copy checking or AI paper correction, goes one step further. The scanned sheets are read and marked by the software itself, question by question, against your school's answer key. Teachers then check the answers the software flags instead of re-marking every sheet.

That is how SkoraAI works. It reads handwritten answers in English, Hindi and Telugu, marks each one by the ideas it covers, not by matching words, and gives a reason for every mark. Anything it cannot read clearly, or is unsure about, goes to a teacher.

Side by side

What the school needsOn-screen markingAI answer sheet checking
Who marks each answer An examiner, every answer ✓ The software, against your key; teachers check the flagged answers
Teacher time at term-end About the same as paper marking ✓ Teachers check flags, not every sheet
Totals and missed questions ✓ Added up automatically ✓ Added up automatically
Feedback for each student ✕ Marks only ✓ Feedback on each answer and the chapters to revise
Class and chapter analysis Totals by question, at best ✓ Weak chapters by class and section
Best suited to Board exams, where every answer must be marked by an examiner The school's own exams: unit tests, term-end and pre-board papers

Which one fits your school's own exams?

Board evaluation has its own rules, and SkoraAI is not used for it. Your school's own exams are different. You set the paper, you write the key, and what you want from the marking is not only a number. You want to know which students need help and which chapters to teach again before the board exam.

That is where AI checking earns its place. The marks come back faster, and every sheet turns into a report: each student's weak chapters, each class's weak topics, and a short note for the parent-teacher meeting. On-screen marking cannot give you that, because it records marks, not what the student understood.

The teacher still decides

The fair question about any AI marking is: who has the final word? In SkoraAI it is the teacher. Answers SkoraAI is unsure about are flagged with the reason and shown first. A teacher can change any mark, and SkoraAI's original mark stays on record next to the change. See how teacher review works.

Many schools will use both ideas over time: scanning for every exam, and AI checking to do the first pass of marking and turn the results into a plan for every student.
