Is AI answer checking accurate? How to test it on your own papers

A percentage measured on another school's papers tells you little about yours. Here is a fair way to test any AI answer sheet checking tool on your own answer sheets.

Test AI marking on your own papers

Every school that looks at AI answer sheet checking asks the same first question: is it accurate? Vendors answer with a percentage. We think a number measured on someone else's papers tells you very little about yours. A better answer is a fair test on your own answer sheets. Here is how to run one, whichever tool you are looking at.

1. Use a paper your teachers have already marked

Pick a recent term-end paper that your teachers have finished marking. That gives you a fair comparison: the same sheets, marked by people who know your students, against the same key. Take a whole class section, not a handful of sheets chosen because they are neat. Untidy handwriting is part of the test.

2. Check the answer key first

AI marking follows the key. If the key says "photosynthesis" and your teachers also accept a good description of it, the key should say so. A key that lists the points a complete answer must cover, and the marks for each part, gives the fairest results. Most disagreements in a first test come from a key that does not say what the teacher means.

3. Compare question by question, not only the totals

This is the step most tests skip. Two sets of totals can look close while individual questions are far apart, because a mark too high on one question hides a mark too low on another. Compare each question's mark. Look for patterns: one question type, one section, or one kind of answer where the two disagree.

4. Read the reasons, not just the marks

A mark without a reason cannot be checked. In SkoraAI, every mark shows which points of the key the student covered, which were missed, and where the answer is on the sheet. When the AI and a teacher disagree, the reason usually shows why: a point the key did not list, an answer the teacher read differently, or handwriting that was hard to read.

5. Look at what was flagged

A careful system says when it is unsure. Check what the tool flagged for a teacher and why. Flags should point at the answers a teacher really needs to see, such as hard-to-read handwriting or an answer the key does not clearly cover, not at half the paper. A tool that never flags anything is guessing.

6. Fix the key, not the marks

Where the AI and your teachers disagree because the key was unclear, improve the key and mark again. SkoraAI marks every school the same way, against the key you approve. It does not quietly shift marks to match one school's habits, so the fix belongs in the key, where every teacher can see it.
